Mechanics of Magic:
- Magic is a substance. A spell is any action performed involving magic. Enchantments/curses are properties given to an object by altering its magic.
- Most living things have a low concentration of magic throughout their bodies. Spell-capable organisms have a circulatory system of magic in their bodies, comprised of the essential core and vessels called arda.
- Spells can be activated by any number of phenomena - spoken incantation, drawn symbols or written words, chemical reactions, physical forces, or more. There is a very precise system to all this, but I do not want to think about it right now.
- There are numerous different states of magic. Ley magic is generated naturally, deep within the earth or beneath the ocean, and is more prevalent in some areas than others. Core magic is generated by living cells and can be passed through the food chain. Toxic magic is composed in such a way that it disrupts the workings of nearly all spells, and thus is hazardous in most situations.
Geography:
- The Basilisk's caverns are in an area called Ceilabrad, a mountainous, forested region at the edge of the kingdom it belongs to. The people here are distanced from the capital and thus largely unaffected by national matters in a typical year.
- Res Trenodian is the largest town in Ceilabrad, and one of the only settlements where coinage is regularly used to buy and sell goods (rather than the barter system used in most small, close villages). For the permanent residents of the area, it is the regional grand market, visited from once a week to once a month. For travelers, it is the last stop on the way out of the kingdom or the first stop on the way in.
